what is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient science where people over the millennia have experimented and inquired about the capacities of the human body, mind and consciousness. Through this inquiry it has been discovered that there is an intimate link between the body, the breath and the mind, and that we can use this understanding to improve our health happiness, and understanding of who we are.
Yoga has innovated many practices over the centuries that allow people to use postures (Asanas), breathwork (Pranayama), and meditation, to relax the body, clear the mind, and open the heart.
Yoga in the modern era
While the practices originated in India and have evolved over a long period of time, the application of yogic science continues to be relevant today across the world.
Benefits of Yoga include:
Stress Reduction: Whether we are standing at a store counter, sitting at a desk, working outdoors, or parenting at home, with the demands of work and family life, stress is a big part of our life. Yoga helps us release tension that is stored in our muscles and our nervous system, as a result helping us to relax and deal more easily with life’s challenges.
Greater sense of fulfilment: Yoga practices go beyond physical exercise. They require a mental awareness to help us cultivate gratitude for what we have, greater honesty in our actions, compassion and friendliness towards others, and discipline to achieve our goals. When we cultivate these attitudes on and off the mat, we begin to experience a greater sense of fulfilment in our life.
Improved relationships: Yoga assists us with developing a quieter, clearer mind that allows us to see our own behaviors and the behaviors of others with greater clarity, kindness and reduced judgement. With this improved mental state we are able to break out of old patterns, and build relationships that flourish.
Better Health: Yoga is recognized by medical institutions as an important preventative intervention, and also as a useful complementary system of healing that can assist recovery from many diseases. Yogic practices help build strength and flexibility in the muscles, and massage and improve the function of many organ systems of the body.
Accessing deeper levels of consciousness: Though humanity has evolved and progressed quickly, many of us still wonder “is this all there is to life, or is there something more than meets the eye?”. Meditation, chanting and movement have been used throughout human history to access deeper levels of consciousness to try and answer this question. Yoga provides a step by step guide on how we can get there.
yoga as a non-denominational practice
Yoga is a non-denominational practice that can be enjoyed by anyone who has a body, breath and mind. The practitioner does not need to change their beliefs, systems of faith, eating habits or anything else in order to start practicing yoga. Like any system of science or healing, the practitioner needs to follow the practices in order to benefit from the results.
